Verses 9-17
Overview, three points to consider.
This prophecy looks very dark, very black indeed, but remember, it is looking farther than Edom and Bozrah. Those two are merely used as metaphors for the world as a whole.
Point One
It describes the sadness, the dejection, the despondency of the changes that are often made by the divine protective care of God, his nature that is, in countries, cities, palaces and even in families. Places that were once thriving and been visited often, strangely go to decay. We won't even be able to find the places where many great towns, celebrated in history once stood. Fruitful countries, in the process of time are turned into barrenness and irritatingly grand cities turned into ruinous heaps. Old decayed buildings look frightful and their ruins are almost as dreaded as their fortresses and soldiers once were.
Point two
It describes the destroying judgements which are the effects of God's wrath
and the just punishment of those that are enemies to his people.
God will inflict these when the year of the redeemed has come.
It will be in the year of compensation and reward,
given for the loss or harm suffered
and the efforts made
for the dispute about
the spiritual point from which reality emerges.
Those that aim to ruin the church can never do that,
but will with unfailing effectiveness or operation,
with certainty that is, ruin themselves.
(Strike a cord yet Lucy?
Sure did with me sweetheart.)
Point Three
It describes the final desolation of this wicked world which is reserved unto fire at the day of judgement.
2 Peter 3:7
"By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,
being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly."
"By the same word"?
The same word that created the heavens and the earth?
Will be the same word that destroys them.
It's one of my favorite questions for people.
How do you think all this came into existence?
The one who created it?
Is going to be the one who destroys it.
Makes sense right?
Revelation 22:13
"I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
By what will he destroy it?
By his all powerful word.
It was the same word that brought the dry bones together and sent them home in Ezekiel 37.
It's the word that is mightier than any two edged sword.
Hebrews 4:12
"For the word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword..."
Remember, this isn't the world God wanted,
he gave man options and gave Satan rulership over the world
in the hope that it would bring people into a relationship with him.
Instead? Man largely chose to worship the world and Satan.
The earth itself at this time,
along with all that is in it, shall be burnt up.
It will be turned into a hell for all those that set their affections on earthly things.
