Even the houses of state, and those of strength, shall become as wildernesses
Isaiah 34:13 "Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds. She (The world) will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls." Not only will grass grow, but thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles (a plant that has jagged leaves covered with stinging hairs) and brambles shall be in her fortresses. (Remember from Verses 1-8, its the armies of man that meet their destruction first). There will be none to cut them up or tread them down.

We sometimes see ruined buildings overgrown with vegetation or littered with waste or trash. It occurs to us then, that this place shall not only be uninhabited and unfrequented as a place where nobles used to keep a full court, but that it is also under the curse of God. Because thorns and thistles were the production of the curse. Genesis 3:18: "It will produce thorns and thistles for you, (the ground, because of the curse from eating from the tree of life without permission) and you will eat the plants of the field."
