KING

Straight from "The Layman's Bible Encyclopedia"

Published in 1964 by The Southwestern Co Nashville TN.

Currently on loan to me from the good folks at New Chapel.

KING

"A title given to a male monarch who rules over an independent people, usually having the right to transmit his power to his descendants When the Israelites first settled in Palestine, they were divided into tribes and clans, each having its local chieftain. In addition to these chieftains, there were specially gifted men known as judges who were raised up by God in times of distress."

"Eventually, foreign oppression became so severe that the Israelites clamored for a king to unite them and correct their desperate situation. Samuel, the last of the judges, regarded this as a rejection of God's divine kingship and warned of the abuses which would result; nevertheless, Saul was selected and anointed to be king. At Saul's death, there was uncertainty as to whether his successor should be chosen on the basis of heredity or natural ability. Both Saul's son Ishbosheth and David claimed the throne; David, of course, was the eventual victor. At his death, Solomon became king and the hereditary principle was firmly established. For further information regarding the kings of Israel and Judah, see chart in Appendix and articles on individual kings.

When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;

And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

1 Samuel 16:1

And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

(As in, fill your strength with the holy spirit, and go...)

1 Kings 11:35

But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.

1 Kings 19:15

And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

1 Chronicles 28:4

Howbeit the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:

Daniel 2:21

And he changeth the times and the seasons:

he removeth kings,

and setteth up kings:

he giveth wisdom unto the wise,

and knowledge to them that know understanding:

Duties and admonitions

Psalm 2:10

Be wise now therefore,

O ye kings:

be instructed,

ye judges of the earth.

Proverbs 25:2-3

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing:

but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

The heaven for height,

and the earth for depth,

and the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Proverbs 31:4-5

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Honor due to kings

Proverbs 24:21

My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:

Proverbs 25:6

Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

(Have ya seen a man diligent in his affairs?

have ya?

I wonder why that might be exactly?)

Ecclesiastes 8:2

I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

Ecclesiastes 10:20

Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber:

for a bird of the air shall carry the voice,

and that which hath wings shall tell the matter."

(Do not entertain thoughts that tear down the leadership

that God has placed in your life.

Instead, do all that you can to respect and honor them.

RESPECT for Authority – Ecclesiastes 10:20)

Lil birds got a way of going and telling others whats being said behind closed doors basically, so its of no use to start with, so why even bother?)
