Oh yeah...we went there..:-).
Does 1 Peter 3:19 Teach That Jesus Preached in Hell?
Resurrections of the Bible.
A) Those that have happened:
Resurrection of the widow’s son in Zarephath (1 Kgs 17:17–22)
1 Kings 17:17-22
New International Version
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”
19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.
Resurrection of the Shunammite’s son (2 Kgs 4:18–37)
2 Kings 4:18-37
New International Version
18 The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19 He said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.
22 She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
23 “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.
24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26 Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
27 When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”
28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
29 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
30 But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.” 37 She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.
Resurrection of the man thrown into Elisha’s grave (2 Kgs 13:20)
2 Kings 13:20-21
New International Version
20 Elisha died and was buried.
Now Moabite raiders used to enter the country every spring. 21 Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet.
Resurrection of Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:41)
Mark 5:41
New International Version
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
Resurrection of the young man at Nain (Luke 7:14)
Luke 7:14
New International Version
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
Resurrection of Lazarus (John 11:38–44)
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said.
“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
Resurrection of unknown saints during the crucifixion (Matt 27:52–53)
52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[a] went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
Resurrection of Christ (Matt 28:1-6)
New International Version
Jesus Has Risen
28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
Resurrection of Tabitha/Dorcas (Acts 9:36–42)
Acts 9:36-42
New International Version
36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”
39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
40 Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.
Resurrection of Eutychus (Acts 20:7–12)
Eutychus Raised From the Dead at Troas
7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 9 Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!” 11 Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left. 12 The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.
B) Those resurrections that are yet to happen:
Resurrection of the Church
(i.e., Rapture, 1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:23)
Believers Who Have Died
13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
1 Corinthians 15:23
New International Version
23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
(My interpretation of that verse has the Firstfruits in 1 Corinthians as the two witnesses,
1 Corinthians was written in 53–54 CE, Revelation written in 96 CE
When Paul wrote 1st Corinthians we did know about the Two Witnesses pericope in revelation 11 yet)
Resurrection of the Two Witnesses (Rev 11:7–11)
See note above.
Revelation 11:7-11
New International Version
7 Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city—which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified. 9 For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. 10 The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.
11 But after the three and a half days the breath[a] of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them.
Resurrection of OT Saints and Martyrs
as well as all who those who lived before Christ,
those that never heard the word during their life even though the gospel was preached in their nation
and those born during Christ Millennial reign (If there are any)
(Revelation 20:4)
(Not just OT saints but all who lived before Christ, those that never heard the word during their life)
Revelation 20:4
New International Version
4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They[a] had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Resurrection of the Wicked and the Righteous done apart from one another, (Revelation 20:5)
Revelation 20:5
New International Version
5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection
(See Acts 24:15 and Luke 14:14)
Notes from:
"A theological delima, what about those who lived before Christ, those who never heard the Gospel during their lifetime, or those who were born during Christ millennial reign if there are any?
John 10:8
“All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.”
“But what about all the people that came before Christ huh? What about them they just go to hell?” 7th grade snarkyness…the people that ask that question don’t wanna hear the answer Im about to give, they really don’t.
Presents a theological dilemma, what about the people born before Christ? Are they doomed to hell? And if so, what kind of God is that?
A common solution to this problem is using
1 Peter 3:18-20
King James Version
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1 Peter 3:19
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
1 Peter 4:6
That is why the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/does-1-peter-teach-jesus-preached-hell/. Guy Waters (PhD, Duke University) is the James M. Baird Jr. professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi.
"in verse 18 that Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit, then he’s saying at the beginning of verse 19 that “in [the Spirit], [Jesus] went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.” Many interpreters have taken Peter to be saying that, either between Jesus’s death and resurrection or after it, Jesus undertook a preaching campaign. Who are said to be the objects of Jesus’s preaching? “The spirits in prison” who “formerly did not obey.” But who are these “spirits”? According to some, they’re the souls of Old Testament believers, whom Jesus liberated from captivity and brought with him to heaven. The message that Jesus proclaims—his death and resurrection—is therefore good news to them.
Others have taken these “spirits” to be condemned souls who rejected Noah millennia earlier. For such individuals, Jesus is confirming their condemnation by proclaiming his victory over them and all his enemies in his death and resurrection. (Some interpreters have seen Jesus offering a postmortem opportunity for faith and repentance to these “spirits in prison.”)
These interpretations have at least one thing in common. They see Jesus doing something—locally, if not bodily—after his death and burial but before his ascension and session in heaven. One problem with such interpretations, though, is they affirm an activity of Jesus that appears nowhere else in Scripture. We should be cautious about advancing such a claim without clearer biblical testimony.
(My issue has always been this, if this is the case? isn’t that kinda a big deal? Wouldn’t the scripture have a lil more to say about it than just two verses? 1st Peter 3:19 and 4:6?)
There is no clear testimony in Scripture that Old Testament believers, at their deaths, were confined to limbus patrum (“the limbo of the fathers”) until such time as Christ released them at his resurrection.
Lazarus Resurrection: Luke 16:22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
Luke 23:43 "And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Resurrections in the bible (1 Kgs 17:17–22, 2 Kgs 4:18–37, 2 Kgs 13:20, Mark 5:41, Luke 7:14, John 11:38–44, Matt 27:52–53, Matt 28:1-6, Acts 9:36–42, Acts 20:7–12, 1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:23, church in the future, (first fruits I interpret way different, haven’t found anywhere else) are the two witnesses, 1 Corinthians written in 53–54 ce, Rev about 40 years later 96 CE) Need check. Rev 11:7–11, (Two Witnesses) Rev 20:4,(Some say old testament saints and martyrs, again I dissent with this) Revelation 20:5, (The General resurrection which I believe is divided into two parts: Acts 24:15 "and I have the same hope in God that they themselves cherish, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked." Luke 14:14 and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Not one time did anybody say, "hey, why'd you do that for? Send me back to heaven." Not Once. These were people who were dead, not in a coma, physically expired and brought back to life. There is a difference between their resurrections and ours when Christ comes back and that is the glorified bodies we will be given:
1 Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound (7th angels), and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (two parts of the same thing). We being all, the dead and the living.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-7
The Return of the Lord
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (We don’t know what hes going to look like, just that we will see him as he is)
Okay so...back to the souls of those who lived before Christ? What happens to them? If Christ didn't preach in Hell but to people who were "dead in sin"? "spiritually dead" ‘deadened by “the law” perhaps even. 1st Peter 4:6, "now dead".
The solution I go with lies in some of the most difficult scripture there is to understand or interpret. 40 some odd years of going to Church only ever heard it brought up once and that was in Bro Joes Revelation Bible Study. He stated the people who were born before Christ are also brought to be with Christ during his 1000 year reign, I have wholeheartedly agreed since I first came across this viewpoint even though I had the wrong part of the verse supporting it.and my position on this matter goes a lil something like this:
Satan is bound up now, for 1000 years he is bound up
Revelation 20:1-3
The Thousand Years
20 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss (Revelation 9:1
Tormenting Locusts from the Abyss 9 And the fifth angel blew the trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to the earth, and the key of the shaft of the abyss was given to him.
and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
Revelation 20: 4-64
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded (think lost their minds) for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
(Hath part is not just a member of the group of the souls that were beheaded, IT’S THE GROUP ITSELF! as well! The group that has a part, well if they have a part? Who has the other part? The people who lived before Christ 😊. Why do I think that? Why else would they need to be “Priest of God and of Christ?” Who exactly are they going to minister to? They weren’t priest before, “Shall be” when? In the millennium reign of Christ on earth.
has part, shares, having a part, one who shares, he who is having a part, the one who shares in, he who has part in the first resurrection, those who share in the First Resurrection, he who has part, he who is having part....

That is a lot less theologically messy in my book than the 1st Peter interpretation that’s commonly preached on. Matthew 24:14, , And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. (Why do we think that means every single person has to hear the gospel before the end comes? Even those that never heard the gospel will be ministered to by Christ and Gods priest in the millennium. Mark 13:10, Luke 24:47, Mark 16:15-16. Why else would he need them there? It mirrors what were supposed to be doing here. I mean this interpretation gets everyone, every single person who ever lived is covered.
Either way, My view, others view 1 Peter, resurrections etc…
Whats most important is that we seek our own souls redemption, not worry about those who came before Christ or didn’t get a chance to hear the gospel being preached in their nation before his imminent return. They get their turn too,
Philippians 2:10-11New King James Version
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (elijah and enoch :-).
Well that's not fair! Those who lost their minds for Christ/God have to share with those who never knew him?1) Its kind of what were expected to do here on earth, so why wouldn't it carry on during the millennium reign? ("they shall be priests of God and of Christ" Rev 20:6, explaining all what was missed to those who never knew 2) It's keeping with Gods character, he’s not fair, he’s just, says it over and over different subject different day.3) There's a reason this is all who never knew, and those who come to life during the millennial reign, they will both be exposed to Satan once more after his release from being bound up, the ones that never knew the Gospel and those who were never exposed to Satan (I hated this part of Bro Joes bible study BTW) But both sets of these individuals will be given the opportunity to be deceived when Satan is released, those who are deceived? lake of fire with Satan, death etc.
Revelation 20:7
The Judgment of Satan
7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison.

Times not linear, particularly in a vision :-). Another subject for a different day :-).
Thats Abaddon, Locust from the deep, Antichrist as Quantum AI, Anti-pretrib rapture and those born before Christ and we haven’t even started yet :-).

Consecrated, set apart, different, not common, sanctified... What's another word for consecrated? Some common synonyms of consecrate are dedicate, devote, and hallow. While all these words mean "to set apart for a special and often higher end," consecrate stresses investment with a solemn or sacred quality.
(Theres a word for all that...get to it here in a second
Foreteller or an Inspired speaker...word for that too...
Put them together and you get..."Holy Prophet"
Inspired or insane…choose wisely
