The Minor Prophets Greatest Hits (Micah)

Micah 2:1-4

Human Plans and God’s Plans

Woe to those who plan iniquity,
to those who plot evil on their beds!
At morning’s light they carry it out
because it is in their power to do it.
They covet fields and seize them,
and houses, and take them.
They defraud people of their homes,
they rob them of their inheritance.

Therefore, the Lord says:

“I am planning disaster against this people,
from which you cannot save yourselves.
You will no longer walk proudly,
for it will be a time of calamity.
In that day people will ridicule you;
they will taunt you with this mournful song:
‘We are utterly ruined;
my people’s possession is divided up.
He takes it from me!
He assigns our fields to traitors.’”

("They covet fields and seize them,
and houses, and take them.
They defraud people of their homes,
they rob them of their inheritance."

Housing crisis anybody?)

Micah 2:6
False Prophets

“Do not prophesy,” their prophets say.
“Do not prophesy about these things;
disgrace will not overtake us.”

(They, false prophets, generally tell you what you want to hear, not what you don't want to hear.)

Micah 2:7

"...“Do not my words do good
to the one whose ways are upright?

Micah 2:11

If a liar and deceiver comes and says,
‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’
that would be just the prophet for this people!

(Sounds about right for our time.)

Micah 3:1-2

"...Should you not embrace justice,
you who hate good and love evil;"

Micah 3:11

Her leaders judge for a bribe,
her priests teach for a price,
and her prophets tell fortunes for money.
Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say,
“Is not the Lord among us?
No disaster will come upon us.”

Micah 4:6-7
The Lord’s Plan

“In that day,” declares the Lord,

“I will gather the lame;
I will assemble the exiles
and those I have brought to grief.
 I will make the lame my remnant,
those driven away a strong nation.
The Lord will rule over them in Mount Zion
from that day and forever.

Micah 5:3

Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
to join the Israelites.

(Benson Commentary

"Until the daughter of Zion, compared here to a woman in travail, shall be delivered out of captivity. Or rather, till the church of God, of which the daughter of Zion was a type, shall bring forth spiritual children of Jew and Gentile extraction unto God, by the preaching of the gospel:..."

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

"Those that threaten ruin to the church of God, soon bring ruin on themselves. This may include the past powerful effects of the preached gospel, its future spread, and the ruin of all antichristian powers. This is, perhaps, the most important single prophecy in the Old Testament: it respects the personal character of the Messiah, and the discoveries of himself to the world. It distinguishes his human birth from his existing from eternity; it foretells the rejection of the Israelites and Jews for a season, their final restoration, and the universal peace to prevail through the whole earth in the latter days. In the mean time let us trust our Shepherd's care and power. If he permits the assault of our enemies, he will supply helpers and assistance for us.

"until the time when she who is in labor bears a son"

It wasn't just the Christian church that was coming with Christ birth that's talked about here.
It's also about the birth of the new church as talked about in Revelation 12:2:

"She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth."

Micah 5:9

"Your hand will be lifted up in triumph over your enemies,
and all your foes will be destroyed."

Always a silver lining for Gods people :-).

Micah 5:13

I will destroy your idols
and your sacred stones from among you;
you will no longer bow down
to the work of your hands.

(It's not just idols for worship like I mentioned about the golden calf,
it's about worshiping things that are man made,
putting them above our relationship with God, sound familiar for our times?)
