If Russia invades Ukraine, what's next?
"...if the West and NATO are to maintain credibility, there must be a response."
There are fissures already in the NATO alliance. Splitting NATO means there is no NATO. It means it's over for the west and autocratic governments (China and Russia) will fill the void. It's a lil hard to tell the rest of the world y'all all need to be like us when were fighting among ourselves and are broke. Russia like "yeah don't listen to them they are infighting and they're broke." Russia has a $600 billion surplus in its coffers to fight a war with BTW, no debt...$600 Bil to the black.
Our options:
A) "Thus far, sanctions up to and including measures against President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle, disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT banking network and supporting an insurgency against Russian forces, have all been floated as possible options."
"sanctions up to and including measures against President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle" it's already been done and has had lil if any effect.
B) "disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT banking network" They are working with China and others to build their own, the threat to remove the Russians from it it will not have the desired disincentivizing effect.
C) "supporting an insurgency against Russian forces" Insurgencies can go on for decades. US and our allies are gonna have that kinda patience and stamina to endure something like that? And it cost $. Probably for decades.
So were really left with no good options.
Russia's response, to our response when they invade, is where the real trouble starts and just like the article mentions, would likely come on these three fronts.
Oil, gas, minerals and resources
"suspension of the oil and gas transshipment...The disruption of the sale of critical raw materials will have considerable knock-on effects in other markets, perhaps just as much as oil and gas prices."
(Particularly with Europe)
