"The U.S. began "setting conditions" for clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz that were laid by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to U.S. Central Command.

"Two U.S. Navy-guided missile destroyers, the USS Frank E. Peterson and the USS Michael Murphy, transited the strait as part of the mission, CENTCOM said in a statement.

"Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce," CENTCOM Cmdr. Adm. Brad Cooper said.

Additional resources, including underwater drones, will join the mission "in the coming days," CENTCOM said.

Iran "remains determined not to allow any vessel to transit without authorization," semiofficial news agency Tasnim reported. According to the outlet, there is no traffic in the straight."
