EFF is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Klein, a bona fide hero who risked civil liability and criminal prosecution to help expose a massive spying program that violated the rights of millions of Americans. Mark didn't set out to change the world. For 22 years, he was a telecommunications technician for AT&T, most of that in San Francisco. But he always had a strong sense of right and wrong and a commitment to privacy. When the New York Times reported in late 2005 that the NSA was engaging in spying inside the U.S., Mark realized that he had witnessed how it was happening. He also realized that the President was not telling Americans the truth about the program. And, though newly retired, he knew that he had to do something. He showed up at EFF's front door in early 2006 with a simple question: "Do you folks care about privacy?"

We did. And what Mark told us changed everything. Through his work, Mark had learned that the National Security Agency (NSA) had installed a secret, secure room at AT&T's central office in San Francisco, called Room 641A. Mark was assigned to connect circuits carrying Internet data to optical "splitters" that sat just outside of the secret NSA room but were hardwired into it. Those splitters -- as well as similar ones in cities around the U.S. -- made a copy of all data going through those circuits and delivered it into the secret room. Mark not only saw how it works, he had the documents to prove it. He brought us over a hundred pages of authenticated AT&T schematic diagrams and tables. Mark also shared this information with major media outlets, numerous Congressional staffers, and at least two senators personally. One, Senator Chris Dodd, took the floor of the Senate to acknowledge Mark as the great American hero he was.

 I dont think it was so much about spying on citizens as it was about blocking, editing, and adding bias (propaganda) 

to incoming data from abroad.

Russia is building up planes and helicopters on Ukraine's borders and trying out new weapons systems (Hypersonic missiles) that we don't have and don't have a defense for in a theatre of conflict and were practicing getting hit by them, and nowhere in the Feds history since they have been keeping records (1954 I believe) have we ever conquered inflation without interest rates higher than the rate of inflation but we cant do that because at 4%-4.5% we default (On just the interest payment! of the national debt) and by next year we have to cut a minimum of 4x the amount of water that the city of Los Angels uses (500,000 acre feet) or you can about forget irrigation in the southwest, and electrical generation and the housewater issues that are sure to arise...

There is certain intelligence data, and there is information in open sources that the enemy is building up its forces on Belarusian territory. This is also a political component: that is, to threaten the West on the borders of this state, as well as to threaten Ukraine.

This threat has always been there, because Russia used the territory of the Republic of Belarus from the outset of the full-scale aggression, they struck [Ukraine] from there...

Therefore, there is no doubt that we need to prepare. A big national holiday, Independence Day, is coming soon. The enemy always uses such dates to send ‘best regards’ and we must be ready for this."

"Every day brings danger. Our abilities are not limitless. Everything that is combat ready will be used," Ihnat added.

He called on the people of Ukraine to be vigilant and not to ignore air raid alerts.

Also: According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the last few days, there has been a decrease in the Russian aviation activity; at the same time, about 430 planes and more than 360 helicopters are concentrated at airfields near Ukraine’s borders in the Russian Federation, Belarus and the territory of occupied Crimea."

“As of August 5, 2022, four enemy missile carriers are remaining ready for action in the Black Sea with 24 Kalibr cruise missiles. ( twice as heavy and almost four times as fast as the Tomahawk and can reach supersonic speeds as it approaches its target). In the Sea of Azov, the enemy continues to control maritime communications, keeping up to three ships and boats combat ready. In the Mediterranean Sea, there are five Kalibr-type missile carriers,” the report states.

Maybe the censorship of information was the reason for all the massive NSA data collection programs? And the Beam splitters that were installed into RM 641A and other "Black Room" data collection facilities around the country? I knew the Patriot Act was a mistake the second they started talking about it. It wasn't to spy on you, although that capability exist as well, it was to prohibit you from reaching information they didn't want you to have.
