BIBLICAL DEMONOLOGY AND
HERESY
THE WHOLE BODY of revealed truth, as constituting
the Bible, inspired and God-given, is the great bulwark and defense against all wicked
power and evil supernaturalism. Implicit faith in its teachings, and hearty appropriation of its
precepts, moreover, constitute the only, but all sufficient, guarantee against Satanic subtlety and demonic
cunning. As long as Scriptural truth is accepted and followed, Satan and his hosts are
stripped of their power to harm or to lead the child of God astray. It is only when revealed
truth is neglected or rejected, either in whole or in part, that the powers of darkness have opportunity
to inflict damage and work havoc upon the Christian.
It is not surprising, therefore, in the
light of these facts, to find Satanic and demonic assault directed particularly and relentlessly
against the Word of God, nor is it amazing to discover that attack against the citadel of
revealed truth is, perhaps, the most conspicuous and potent role played by demons.
A. DEMONISM AND DOCTRINAL
DECEPTION
Warnings against error and doctrinal corruption
assume a position of remarkable prominence and importance in Scripture, and particularly on
the pages of the New Testament.Whether it is Moses, passionately exhorting the Israelites to
serve Jehovah and not to forget His precepts (Deut. 9), or David, in solemn assembly, giving
counsel to Israel and to his son Solomon (I Chron. 28), or the prophets advising with stem
uncompromising voice, or our Lord himself predicting the rise of "false Christs and
false prophets" (Matt. 24:24), or the Apostle Paul cautioning the Ephesian elders against the inroads
of "grievous wolves" (Acts 20:29), or Peter forewarning against apostate teachers (II Pet. 2),
the Bible usually portrays heresy and false doctrine as simply the result of defection in the
human agent. But there is not lacking definite revelation of a deeper cause than the mere
manifestation of error and apostasy in human conduct. As usual, Scripture conducts one to
ultimate realities and final causes, rather than to mere effects and developments.
1. DEMONISM AS THE SOURCE OF
DOCTRINAL DECEPTION
The Apostle Paul, in a pivotal prophetic passage,
traces all doctrinal aberration to its deeper cause and its ultimate source in the invisible
demon agents behind visible human actors.He presents the perversion of truth and godliness as
the direct work of Satan's minions, the demons. "But the Spirit saith expressly, that
in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of
demons" (I Tim. 4:1). The "seducing spirits" are the deceiving "demons," who are
ceaselessly diligent in perverting the truth and in leading God's people astray from sound doctrine.
As the Church
is guided "into all truth" by the "Spirit of truth" (John 16:13), the foundation head
of all true inspiration, so He is opposed, in His beneficent ministrations, by Satan, "the
spirit of error" (I John 4:6), the arch-enemy of truth and the great deceiver, who, with his demon-helpers,
is the source of all false inspiration.But since Satan is a mere creature, and, unlike the Holy
Spirit, neither infinite nor omnipresent, he requires the aid of an innumerable host of wicked,
deluding spirits to carry on effectively his vast program of doctrinal corruption and
deception.As the "Spirit of truth" inspires the genuine prophets and teachers of God (I Cor. 12:3), so the
"spirit of error," and his spirit-satellites, energize the "many false prophets" who
"are gone out into the world" (I John 4:1). Hence the Apostle John, like the Apostle Paul, traces error
to its real source in satanic and demonic activity, rather than in the human agent.
The
spurious inspiration takes the precise form of "doctrines of demons." The Pauline
phrase does not mean "doctrines about demons," or demonology. Still less does it denote heresiarchs,
or the human promulgators of strange isms and cults.

It emphatically links demonism with
false doctrine,' and has direct reference to wicked supernatural spirits, and specifically to
the "doctrines taught by demons," which the Apostle James vigorously describes as representing
"not a wisdom that cometh down from above," but which is "earthly, sensual,
devilish," (daimoniodes, "demoniacal") (Jas. 3:15). In other words, James views what Paul calls
"teachings of demons" as a perverted wisdom, which "belongs to earth, to the unspiritual nature,
and to evil spirits" (Jas. 3:15, Weymouth).
The immediate occasion which evoked the revelation
of demonism as the source of doctrinal perversion was an erroneous teaching taking the
form of a falseasceticism, condemning marriage and the eating of certain foods.The
Apostle Paul had just ended on a triumphal note, as he reviewed the "mystery of
godliness," and, then sweeping majestically over the great events of redemption, from the incarnation to the
glorious ascension (I Tim. 3:16), he offered the finished work of Christ as a fitting
background for his contrasting somber reference to satanic power in opposition to the faith and truth
of God, and set forth the finished work of Christ as a sure and certain guarantee of the
future triumph of truth over error, despite the present prevalence and grievous opposition of
evil.

The prophetic warning against latter-day demonic activity in corrupting the truth, and in
turning many away from the faith, is couched in particularly solemn and impressive language. Paul
seems almost to speak as if, under the prophetic influence, he had an activity
independent of himself as an apostle.

target of demonic assault, and which, Jude reminds us, "was once for all delivered unto
the saints," and is to be earnestly contended for, as a treasure and resource subject to diabolic
spoliation.The "later times" are the closing days of the gospel dispensation,

as the professing Church
lapses more and more into the prophesied lukewarm Laodicean condition (Rev. 3:14-22).
Departing from the faith, neglecting and rejecting God's truth, the dupes of Satan will
devote their attention to misleading spirits and pernicious doctrines instigated by demons.

The Apostle is obviously describing a certain
class of persons, who are themselves deceived, but who are not actively and aggressively deceiving
others, and who do not maintain the direct and intimate intercourse with deluding demons that is
characteristic of another class, represented in the succeeding verses.
(That is a HUGE distinction.)
This second group
manifestly consists, not of those falsely taught, but of the false teachers who instruct them. These are
not only themselves deceived, but are actively engaged in deceiving others. They are the
human agents through whom the seducing spirits work, and so completely are they under
demon tutelage and control, that their disciples, who listen to them, and follow them, are actually
represented as giving "heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons.

empty insincerity, the base pretense, and the perfidy of these lying teachers, together with a
conscience so hardened and seared as to be devoid of the sense of right and wrong,

who "fall away from the faith," and give "heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,"
do so "through the hypocrisy" of their false religious leaders and teachers, who are exposed as
"men that speak lies," and who are" branded in their own conscience as with a

Although the precise form of error assumed by the "doctrines of
demons," in this particular instance, is seemingly circumscribed and limited to some local heresy
that immediately threatened the peace and purity of the Church at that time, yet it must not
be supposed that demonic deception is confined to unsound teaching inculcating a
hypocritical asceticism, forbidding marriage, and frowning upon certain kinds of foods.

themselves against the authority of Him who ordained the institution of marriage, and the
eating of all foods, and cast an aspersion upon Him, as though He were an imperfect being.

inveterate satanic spirit of rebellion against God (Isa. 14:12-14), of confirmed falsehood (Gen.3:4), and of calumination of the divine goodness (Gen. 3:5), is characteristic of all
"doctrines of demons," and is discernible, in greater or less degree, in one form or another, in all
their multitudinous variations. The same is true if one sees in the phrase "forbidding to
marry" the promulgation of doctrines of "free love," and the abrogation of the marriage relation, or
whether one construes "commanding to abstain from meats," as following a prescribed diet,
which will make one more amenable and susceptible to spirit communication .3 In any
case, the essential satanic character is always apparent in the particular perversion of God's
truth.

The zeal and energy with which leaders of new and
strange cults disseminate their falsehoods and promote their propaganda are matters of common
observation.Too often those who possess the truth sit idly and supinely by, while
those who advance flagrant error and espouse fantastic heresy, propagate their vagaries with
indefatigable enthusiasm and unflagging fervor.
The only adequate explanation of this glaring fact
is that demonism is not only the source, but also the dynamic, of doctrinal deception. Error,
which demons instigate, they take endless pains to propagate.The subtle allurement of idolatry
and the fanatical zeal of its devotees can be explained only on the scriptural basis (I Cor.10:19-22), that "behind the idol there are terrible spiritual presences- demons."6

Apostle John who reveals the truth that demonism is the impelling power propagating false doctrine.
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but prove the spirits, whether they are of God; because many
false prophets are gone out into the world"(I John 4:1). It is arresting and very significant
that the Apostle abruptly introduces the expression "false prophets" into this
verse, instead of what might naturally be expected, "false spirits."He has been warning against
deceiving, lying "spirits," the invisible demon agents, and, suddenly, without any apparent transition, speaks
of their visible human agents, as if the two concepts were in the closest possible relationship
indeed, as if they were actually interchangeable. The explanation is that the
wicked, deluding spirits are definitely identified with their human instruments, because the demons
are the impelling impulse and power that energize the spurious prophets.
False teachers are
tireless and relentless in the extension of their aberrations, because the demons, inspiring
and energizing them, are diligent and industrious. Besides actual heresy, it would seem

Because many false teachers have gone out into the
world, inspired and impelled by evil spirits, the Apostle warns the people of God against the
subtle danger of believing "every spirit." He does not say, "Believe not every teacher or
prophet," but, "Believe not every spirit."He goes deeper to the source and dynamic of deception
behind the false teacher. Heeding and believing the teacher is tantamount to heeding and believing
the spirit motivating and controlling him.

trying them by the unfailing criteria of the Word of God, is the all-important task, if believers
are not to "fall easy victims to the latest fads in spiritualistic humbuggery."7
In explicit
terms, John gives the test of the Spirit of God: "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God" (I John 4:2). It is important to notice,
that, whereas, in this whole context, the Apostle most definitely implies the existence of
"spirits who are of God," that is, the good and elect angels sent forth and commissioned by God, yet the
entire emphasis, in matters doctrinal, and in the realm of the revelation of spiritual truth,
as is here the case, is very significantly not on these benign beings, but altogether on the Holy
Spirit.

The lesson is plain. Although angelic spirits have a definite ministry to the people of
God here on the earth, and are "sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit
salvation"(Heb. 1:14), yet their beneficent activities are concerned with temporal mercies and
ministrations, rather than with the revelation of spiritual truth.For this supreme
task there is another Spirit, greater than all created spirits, the Holy Spirit of God, and
"believers look not to angels for guidance and understanding," as H. A. Ironside says, `but
to . . . the Holy Spirit, who came into the world to take the things of Christ and open them to
us."8
It is important to note the force of the
injunction (the mode of the verb is, in all likelihood, imperative) which is not "Hereby know ye the
spirits who are of God," but, "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God."

1. DEMONISM AND DOCTRINAL
DIVISIONS
The Holy Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth, is
the great Unifier. In answer to the Saviour's fervent intercessory prayer that those whom the Father had
given Him "may all be one" (John 17:11, 21, 22), the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost to
unite all God's people positionally into "one body," the Church, by the baptism with the Spirit (I Cor.
12:13; Rom. 6:3-4; Eph. 4:5; Col. 2:12; Gal. 3:27). The most impassioned exhortations of the
Holy Spirit, through this Apostle, are to the end that God's people may maintain experimentally
the unity which they possess positionally, by the Spirit's baptizing work (Eph. 4:1-6; Phil.2:2-3).
Whereas the "Spirit of truth" is the great Unifier, "the spirit of error" (I John4:6) is the great divider.

Satan and demons have the keenest perception and appreciation of the eminent
practicality of the old adage, "in unity there is strength." When unable to keep their victims
from contact with truth, light, and salvation, they resort to the next best device to further their

foundations of Christian unity to disrupt and disorganize the efficiency and testimony of those,
who, when standing together, possess such exhaustless energy, and wield such tremendous

great prominence given in Scripture to warnings against false teachers, heresies, and divisions,
and the appalling spectacle of such a multiplicity of sects and cults in Christendom, lose all aspect
of singularity.
That Scripture views the destruction or impairment of Christian unity as
one of the chief disasters and calamities of demonic deception and the satanic introduction of
false doctrine into the Church,
appears clear from the prevailing New Testament use of the term
"heresy" (hairesis). This word is never employed in its strict modem sense, as meaning
"heterodoxy" or "doctrinal aberration,"but consistently denotes a "sect" or
"faction" produced by the introduction of such error-thus inseparably identifying heresy with factional
division.
It is true, however, that the later meaning attached to the word in ecclesiastical language
and common parlance is, perhaps, implied in one passage in Peter's second Epistle; yet even
herethe emphatic idea is the doctrinal divisions themselves, rather than the erroneous
"opinions" or "tenets" producing such divisions."But there arose false prophets also among the people,
as among you also shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies(haireseis apoleias, "sects of perdition"),
denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon
themselves swift destruction" (II Pet. 2:1). The Twentieth Century New Testament accurately
renders the expression "ruinous divisions," and Weymouth gives "fatal divisions,"
both recognizing the descriptive force of the genitive apoleias, as well as taking into account the
primary emphasis of the word, as elsewhere in the New Testament, upon the effect produced by the
false teaching, rather than upon the false teaching itself, as the cause of that effect.
In conformity with the general denotation of an
effect, rather than a cause, the word "heresy" is employed to designate a "sect,"
"party," or body of men who have separated themselves from others, advocating some particular doctrine
or special mode of life, in accordance with their own peculiar beliefs. Thus the term is used
to refer to "the sect" or "party" of the Sadducees (Acts 5:17) and the Pharisees (Acts5:15; 26:5).Likewise, the expression is applied derogatively to Christians(Acts 24:5, 14;28:22).
In Galatians 5:20"heresies" are listed under "the works of the flesh," along with
three other terms of similar import: "factions" (eritheiai, "party spirit, feuds"), "divisions"(dichostasiai, "splits"), and "parties" (haireseis). This
list of three vices is evidently arranged in accordance
with the progressively aggravated character of the sins enumerated. "Party spirit"
degenerates into actual "divisions," which, when developed into distinct and organized parties, are called
"heresies." A similar use of the word occurs in I Corinthians 11:19: "For there must be also
factions (haireseis) among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you." But
the force, in this particular verse, is likely simply "dissensions" arising from
diversity of opinions and aims. In Titus 3:10the adjectival form of the word occurs, signifying "creating
or fostering factions": "A factious (heretical) man after a first and second admonition
refuse."
In the fixed ecclesiastical sense, which it ultimately attained, the term "heresy" indicates
not only any doctrinal distortion, but open espousal of fundamental error with respect to the central
truths of Christianity, in the face of all better instruction, often combined with aggressive
assault upon the common faith of the Church, and its defenders.However, its strictly New Testament
usage is seen not to contain these elements,except, perhaps, by implication in II Peter 2:1,
but is found significantly to center all emphasis on the connection of heresy with disunity and
division in the Church of Jesus Christ.
The inference is clear. The Holy Spirit, the Creator

infinitely efficient Worker, who operates with unimpeded power in the sphere of true Christian

thought of as errors and aberrations wholly beyond the Apostles' times and ministries, and confined
to succeeding centuries, from whose bane early Christians were immune. So far from this
being true, the Apostles themselves were harassed by every imaginable form of
unorthodoxy-legalism, antinomianism, Gnosticism, humanism, materialism, false asceticism, (As in "YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE THIS.)
and
pseudo-rationalism. Demonic deception left no cardinal Christian doctrine unattacked, from the
deity of Christ, to the resurrection of the dead.Of course, sufficient time had not elapsed for the
formation of elaborate systems of heterodoxy, and the organization of well-defined
sects, as proceeded apace in succeeding centuries,

but the doctrinal perversions were
present none the less, if unformulated and unsystematized.
With the formation of systems of

the inevitable ravages of "doctrines of demons" from without, in dethroning the Word of God, it laid
the foundation for a whole new brood of "doctrines of demons" from within, and
became a well-knit and brilliantly organized system of incredible error, a very citadel for the
"doctrines of demons.""
Many of the so-called "heretical sects" which arose during the course of the
Christian centuries, were true and sincere children of God, often, however, poorly instructed, and
ignorantly embracing certain fanatical and erroneous notions. Others were so misled as to
have had no essential conception of Christ's saving work at all.
(There were also some of the so-called "heretical sects" in the early days of the church who were dismissed as such on purely POLITICAL or TECHNICAL GROUNDS and who werent really "heretical sects" at all.
Modem cults offer an
interesting study in the various degrees of demonic deception. Spiritism, theosophy, ChristianScience, Christadelphianism, Swedenborgianism, humanism, Mormonism, atheism, agnosticism, the NewThought, and Bahaism are systems of almost incredible distortion and fantastic
obscuration of truth, displaying everywhere the evidences of extreme demonic deception. Such sects
as Russellism(Jehovah's Witnesses, or International Bible Students' Association),
Seventh-Day Adventism,Buchmanism, and British Israelism offer the tragic spectacle of a mass of
truth vitiated by error, and demonstrate a more keen and subtle type of demonic distortion.Perhaps, the most deadly and devastating of all, parading with pious sanctimoniousness "as an
angel of light," and perniciously and ingeniously working within the great historical denominations,
is modernism, Satan's masterpiece of delusion.12 Others may slay their thousands. It
slays its tens of thousands as a cancerous growth within, eating at the vitality of
historical Christianity.

only a sweeping revival of the Spirit of God

into that lukewarm state, in which our Lord threatened he would "spew" Laodicean
professors out of his mouth (Rev. 3:16).
Elmer T. Clark, in writing on the smaller church denominations, says
that there are approximately four hundred religious denominations of various kinds in the
United States.13
He further adds:
One who regards the present as an `age of doubt' has
evidently failed to study the convictions of the small sects; for one familiar with the doctrines
held by multiplied thousands and even millions of their adherents will rather be impressed with
the amazing credulity of a large section of our population. Many strange beliefs are crystallized
in the dogmas of these churches.
(If you think my understanding of Genesis 6 is a "strange belief"?
Then Come explain the Sethian view of Genesis 6 to me again,
and how that would explain
any of the other associated difficult scriptures
that pertains to it
or how it explains
so obviously what is going on in our world today.
