Isaiah 1:4

Ah sinful nation, 

a people laden with iniquity, 

a seed of evildoers, 

children that are corrupters: 

they have forsaken the Lord,

 they have provoked 

the Holy One of Israel 

unto anger, 

they are gone away backward.

Into this situation came two forces with a promise of fresh vitality: The worship of rulers, especially of the Roman emperors, and the so-called "mystery religions. "The ancient gods are far away: thee we see face to face-so began the hymn addressed by the Athenians to their "deliverer," Demetrius Poliorcetes in 307 B.C. And in the cities of Asia (in the Roman province in western Asia Minor) inscriptions were set up, hailing the emperor Augustus, after his victory at Actium in 31 B.C., and his "restoration of the Republic," as the Savior, Pacifier, Protector of the whole world, the "God manifest" whose birth-day was henceforth to be the New Year's Day for the whole province. But this worship of "divine men" failed, before long, as anyone could see that such rulers as Caligula, Nero, Domitian not only were not gods but in reality were very wicked men, perhaps even insane.
