"Notes" not originaly included in Scofield Reference Bible (KJV) Angel, Summary:

"Notes" not previously included in the
Scofield Reference Bible (KJV)
"Angel", Summary,
as it was way long enough to begin with :-).

Enjoy

Judges 2:1

And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Notes

1(2:1) This particular angel, as distinguished in Scripture from all others, is often referred to in the O.T. (cp. Gen.16:9; 22:11; 48:16; Ex.3:2; 14:19; Num.22:22; Jud.2:4; 6:11; 13:3; 2 Ki.19:35; Isa.63:9; Zech.1:12; 12:8).

Malachi 3:1

3 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

Notes

2(3:1) The first part of v. 1 is quoted of John the Baptist (Mt.11:10; Mk.1:2; Lk.7:27), but the next words, "the Lord, whom ye seek," etc., are nowhere quoted in the N.T. The reason is obviously that, in everything except Christ's first advent, the picture in vv. 2-5 of the LORD who suddenly comes to His Temple (Hab.2:20) is one of judgment, not of grace. Malachi, in common with other O.T. prophets, saw both advents of Messiah blended in one horizon, but did not see the separating interval described in Mt.13 which was consequent upon the rejection of the King (Mt. 13:16-17). Still less was the Church Age in his vision (Eph.3:3-6; Col.1:25-27). "My messenger (v. 1, above) is John the Baptist; the "messenger of the covenant" is Christ in both of His advents, but with special reference to the events which are to follow His second coming.

Matthew 25:32

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

Notes:

2(25:32) This judgement of individual Gentiles is to be distinguished from other judgements in
Scripture, such as the judgment of the Church (2 Cor.5:10-11),

(I do not differentiate between this judgement and the one mentioned above in 2 Cor.5:10-11, to me they are one in the same.)

the judgment of Israel (Ezek. 20:33-38), and the judgment of the wicked after the millennium (Rev.20:11-15). The time of this judgment is "when the Son of man shall come in his glory," i.e. at the second coming of Christ after the tribulation. The subjects of this judgment are "all nations," i.e. all Gentiles (Gk. ethne) then living on earth.

(100% agreed)

Three classes of individuals are mentioned: (1) sheep, saved Gentiles; (2) goats, unsaved Gentiles; and (3) brethren, the people of Israel.

(vs 40
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto
one of the least of these my brethren
ye have done it unto me.

(Not seeing where that only applies to Israel as Scofield does.)

The scene is on earth; no books are opened; it deals with the living rather than with those translated or raised from the dead. The test of this judgment is the treatment by individual Gentiles of those whom Christ calls "my brethren," living in the preceding tribulation period when Israel is fearfully persecuted (cp. Gen.12:3). The good works mentioned are the proof but not the ground of faith and salvation. The fact that the righteous and the unrighteous are still mingled and require separation after the establishment of Christ's throne on earth makes evident that no rapture, i.e. translation of the saints, could have taken place at the time of Christ's coming to the earth after the tribulation.

(100% disagree.

The Saints can be raptured
and the righteous
and unrighteous
can still be mingled.

Because they are.

Otherwise?
 We wouldnt have
sheep and goats
here like we do.

Scofield (an early pre-tribulation rapture proponent), here
unwittingly make a compelling case against
his very own position.)

"In such a case the separation here described
would have already occurred
before the establishment of the throne."

(Where are the verse(s) supporting that view?
Why didnt Scofield reference them?)

The sheep are Gentiles saved on earth during the period between the rapture and Christ's second coming to the earth.

(Again, where are the references to scripture to support that? Guy has referenced everything under the sun basically but doesn't offer up references to support these views?

The reason is obvious.

We are living the time period right before the second coming, and there is no pre-tribulation rapture.

Scofields view here requires an explanation.
The post-tribulation rapture position
only requires scripture.

Mathew 24:29-31

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet

(Doesnt say 7th BTW)

and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

1 Corinthians 15:52

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trump
for the trumpet shall sound

(Again, It says last, not seventh)

and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,
and we shall be changed.

Revelation 19:11

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

(Makes way more sense for "the last trumpet"
to be an eighth one
signifying the beginning of the new age
than it does to be the seventh one,
signaling the end of this present age.)

Genesis 6:4

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Notes

1(6:4) Some hold that the "sons of God" were fallen angels "who kept not their first estate" (Jude 6-7, cp. "even as Sodom and Gomorrah"; 2 Pet.2:4-9). Accordingly, this intrusion into the human sphere produced a race of wicked giants (Gen.6:4-6). Others hold that since angels are spoken of in a sexless way (cp. Mt.22:30), and that the words "took them wives" signifies a lasting marriage, the reference has to do with the breakdown of the separation of the godly line of Seth by intermarriage with the godless line of Cain.

(Few points
go figure lol

(1) They didnt take wives untill they left their "Essence", "Habitation", "Dwelling".
(Jude 6-7 listed above).

2) This view (Sethian) doesn't explain why Noah was "perfect in his generations"

3) It doesnt explain why Goliath was still in the picture later on.

Genesis 6:4
"There were giants in the earth
in those days; and also after that,

4) Doesnt explain God ordering the killing of
every man woman and child in

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

The God you worship on Sunday ordered that.
Yes he did.
Maybe we should here a sermon on that some Sunday.
Im sure its in the lectionary.
(Sarcasm BTW)

5) Jude 6-7 tells you explicitly why those angels were locked up

Jude 6-7

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate,
but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha,
and the cities about them in like manner,
giving themselves over to fornication,
and going after strange flesh,
are set forth for an example
suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

(The angels in vs 6 are compared to the "going after strange flesh" in Sodom and Gomorrha,  (and the cities about them) in
vs 7 for a reason.

Today? People following the doctrine of demons spoke of in 1 Timothy 4:1, think its perfectly fine for those
"going after strange flesh" to lead worship:

A refinement of the latter view holds that the expression "sons of God" refers to all the godly, and "daughters of men" to all the ungodly, irrespective of their natural paternity.

(This is my biggest criticism of the Sethian view as beingbeing in error, You dont get to take what Sons of God means in here in Genesis 6 (angels) and change it to what you would like it to be, (as demonstrated above) and leave it mean angles when used elsewhere. (Job 1:6, Job 38:6-7

To what other passage of scripture do we do this?
NONE.

Its not complicated my friend says :-).

Whichever view is held,

(There is only one view to have.
One. One view explains things,
the other view creates things to be explained,
case closed.)

it is obvious that Satan attempted so to corrupt the race that the Messiah could not come to redeem man. But God salvaged a remnant (Gen.6:8ff.), and a godly line was preserved. However, there is no remedy for rebellion against God; the judgment predicted by Noah's ancestor fell

Revelation 20:10

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Notes

 Satan,
Summary:

This fearful being, apparently created one of the cherubim (Ezek. 1:5, note; 28:12, note) and anointed for a position of great authority , perhaps over the primitive creation (Gen.1:2, note 5; Ezek.28:11-15), fell through pride (Isa:
14:12-14His "I WIll" Isa 14:13) marks the introduction of sin into the universe. Cast out of heaven (Lk.10:18), he makes earth and air the scene of his tireless activity (Eph.2:2; 1 Pet.5:8). After the creation of man he entered into the serpent (Gen.3:1, note) and, beguiling Eve by his subtletysecured the downfall of Adam and through him of the race, and the entrance of sin into the world of men (Rom.5:12-14). The Adamic Covenant (Gen.3:15, note) promised the ultimate defeat of Satan through the "seed of the woman." Then began Satan's long warfare against the work of God on behalf of humanity, which still continues. The present world system (Rev.13:8), organized upon the principles of force, greed, selfishness, ambition, and sinful pleasure, is his work and was the bribe which he offered to Christ (Mt.4:8-9). Of that world system he is prince (Jn.14:30; 16:11), and god (2 Cor.4:4).

 (2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Revelation 11:4
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

( this age comes to an end.
PERIOD.)

As "prince of the power of the air" (Eph.2:2) he is at the head of a vast host of demons (Mt.7:22, note).

To him, under God, was committed upon earth the power of death (Heb.2:14).

(Relax lol,
Revelation 1:18

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Satan has to ask Gods
permission to even harm:

Job 2:4-7
4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

The "power of death" Satan has referenced in Hebrews 2:14 above is:

"we must remember that death, originally announced (Genesis 2:17) as the penalty of transgression, is regarded in the New Testament (notably by St. Paul) as the sign of the continual dominion of sin over the human race. Thus in Romans 5:12,15 the mere fact that all men "from Adam to Moses" had died is adduced as sufficient proof that all were under condemnation as sinners."

And

That, "having the power of death," which has been variously interpreted, may be taken in the usual sense of ἔχειν κράτος τινος, viz. "having power, or dominion, over." Satan has had the dominion over death allowed him because of human sin. And it may be observed that elsewhere, not only death, but other woes that flesh is heir to - its precursors and harbingers - are attributed to Satanic agency (cf. John 1:12; John 2:6; Luke 13:16; 1 Corinthians 5:5).

Cast out of heaven as his proper sphere and "first estate," he still has access to God as the "accuser of the brethren" (Rev.12:10) and is permitted a certain power of sifting or testing the self-confident and carnal among believers (Job 1:6-11; Lk.22:31-32; 1 Cor.5:5; 1 Tim.1:20); but this is a strictly permissive and limited power, and believers so sifted are kept in faith through the advocacy of Christ (Lk.22:31-32; 1 Jn.2:1, note). At the beginning of the great tribulation Satan's privilege of access to God as accuser will be withdrawn (Rev.12:7-12)At the return of Christ in glory Satan will be bound for 1000 years (Rev.20:2), after which he will be "loosed for a little season" (Rev.20:3,7-8and will become the head of a final effort to overthrow the kingdom. Defeated in this, he will be cast into the lake of fire, his final doom.

The notion that he reigns
in hell is not Biblical.

He is prince
of this present world system

(And that is Babylon to me = wicked world power structures.
All of em.
Every last one of em
Ecclesiastical, Governmental, Economic, Educational, Political etc...)

but will be tormented in the lake of fire.

Matthew 7:22

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’

Notes

1(7:22) Although the Greek daimonia is generally translated "devils" in the KJV, "demons” is correct. There is only one devil (Gk. diabolos), i.e. Satan. To the reality and personality of demons the N.T. Scriptures bear abundant testimony. As totheir origin, nothing is clearly revealedbut they are not to be confounded with the angels mentioned in 2 Pet.2:4; Jude 6.

(Those are the ones who had sex with mortal women Genesis 6:1-4, pretty easy  to figure out why they are locked up and others arent)

Summary:

(1) Demons are spirits (Mt.12:43, 45),

(They simply have no need of bodies.

Hebrews 1:14
Are they not all ministering spirits
sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Only Evil Spirits born on this earth need them:

Enoch 15:8-10

8 And now, the giants who were born from body and flesh will be called Evil Spirits on the Earth, and on the Earth will be their dwelling.

9 And evil spirits came out from their flesh, because from above they were created, from the Holy Watchers was their origin and first foundation. Evil spirits they will be on Earth and ‘Spirits of the Evil Ones’ they will be called.

10 And the dwelling of the Spirits of Heaven is Heaven, but the dwelling of the spirits of the Earth, who were born on the Earth, is Earth.

Satan's emissaries (Mt.12:26-27), and so numerous as to make Satan's power practically ubiquitous (Mk.5:9).

(If they have to have a body?
It was an evil spirit born of this earth,
by an unholy union of angels
and mortal women.
(Its why some are locked up)
They are disembodied spirits in need of bodies because
(most of them, Goliath and his brothers at least are exceptions)
got killed in the flood.)

(2) They are capable of entering and controlling both men and beasts (Mk.5:2-5,11-13),

(Capable of, not "in need of")

and carnestly seek embodiment, without which, apparently, they are powerless for evil

(3) Demon influence and demon possession are discriminated in the N.T. Instances of the latter are Mt.4:24; 8:16,28,33; 9:32; 12:22; Mk.1:32; 5:15-16,18; Lk.8:36; Acts 8:7; 16:16

(Every instance listed above is of an Evil or unclean spirit in a body. It supports the assertation that Satan and the rebels that came with him didn't come to the earth (from the air) until Christ ascended.

John 14:30
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Revelation 12:3-13

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

(Woman = Wisdom
Delivering the Early Church
Which would be after Christ Ascension.)

5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

(He had already been expelled from Heaven.
The Heaven spoke of in vs 8 above
is the air of the earth, of which he was the prince.

Ephesians 2:2
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:...)

9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

So if that is the case?
(Which it is)
Then the evil spirits on this earth
before Satan gets kicked out of the air
which he was relegated to unto that time?

Had to have been born of mortals
here on this earth, and therefore in need of bodies.
See Enoch 15 above again.)

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.)

(4) Demons are unclean, sullen, violent and malicious

(5) They know Jesus Christ as Most High God and recognize His supreme authority

(6) They know their eternal fate to be one of torment (Mt.8:29; Lk.8:31).

(7) They inflict physical maladies

(Know a little bit about affliction,
Promise.)

However, mental disease is to be distinguished from the disorder of mind due to demoniacal control.

(8) Demon influence may manifest itself in religious asceticism (1 Tim.4:1-3), degenerating into uncleanness.

(Being an ascetic because you want to get closer to God doesn't work. Doing it because God wants to get closer to you does.)

(9) The sign of demon influence in religion
is departure from the faith,
i.e. the body of revealed truth in the Scriptures.

1 Tim.4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Revelation 18:4

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying,
Come out of her, my people,
that ye be not partakers of her sins,
and that ye receive not of her plagues.

 (10) The demons maintain a conflict with Christians who would be spiritual
The Christian's resources are prayer and bodily control (Mt.17:21), "the whole armor of God" (Eph.6:13-18).

(11) All unbelievers are open to demon possession (Eph.2:2).

 (12) Exorcism in the name of Jesus Christ
(Acts 16:18) was practiced for demon possession.

(No elaborate hocus pocus, spells and incantations and secret rites that only a few know, just prayer, fasting, and the Name of Jesus Christ is all you need.)

 And

(13) one of the awful features of the apocalyptic judgments in which this age will end is an emergence of demons out of the abyss

(Scofield didnt live to see what we are today.
He didnt have UAP hanging out over his tree line every night. As established plenty of times at this point, these are Gods destroyer angels as: An angel has the Key to the bottomless pit (Revelation 9:1), (probably the same one that locks up Satan in Revelation 20:1-3), they only harm those without the seal of God on their forehead (not in their right minds basically) Revelation 9:4 and the eight descriptors listed in vs 7-10 are not to be taken literal, but understood as a symbol of their eschatological nature, destroying mans previous notion of a purely material, physical world.)

I am not picking on C.I. Scofield,
his notes in his edition of the KJV are extremely valuable
(as are others).

This edition was originally published in 1909.

My thoughts on Genesis 6 (Sons of God) and Revelation 9 (Locust of the Deep) have been put forth well before my friend ever gave me his copy of the Scofield Reference bible a few weeks back.

With the exceptions of :

the pretribulation rapture

(Easily dismissed)

a focus on Christian Zionism
and Dispensationalism?

(I put together both:
Covenant Theology
with Dispensationalism.

What side is a quarter
when you flip it in the air?
Heads or Tails?

Its both.

Just not a verybig fan
of Black or White thinking)

Scofield and I have way more in common
than that which we would disagree on.

That this edition was written some 116 years ago
and his notes still extremely relevant to this day
are a testament to their author.
