The ancient city was mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, under the name of Caesarea Philippi, as the place where Jesus confirmed Peter's confession that Jesus was the Messiah; the site is today a place of pilgrimage for Christians.

It was very significant prophecy which Jesus uttered concerning the abysmal delusion which would be the penalty for Jewish skepticism in the last days. ."I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive" (John 5:43). Refusing the light, they will accept gross darkness. Rejecting the true Christ, they will welcome the false one, even him "whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power, and signs, and lying wonders" (II Thess. 2:9), who "opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God" (II Thess. 2:4).
