"[Music] is the Antichrist an alternative 0:05 view what we're going to explore is the possibility at least that 0:11 there may be a very widespread myopia regarding the subject of the Antichrist 0:16 that we too have fallen into and uh so we're going to try to stand back from 0:23 our presuppositions of the past and try to let the text speak to us 0:31 and if we're correct we may come up with some real surprises quite a different 0:37 perspective from the very commonly uh uh presumed scenario for the end times so 0:46 uh let's just start backwards a little bit we all talk about Armageddon that climactic battle at the End of the Age 0:53 getting its name of course from Revelation 16:16 he gathered them together into a place called in the 0:59 Hebrew tongue Armageddon which is har mageddon or Mount Megiddo if you will that's a literal place on the planet 1:04 Earth in fact if you take the planet Earth and zero in to a particular piece 1:09 of real estate called Israel you'll discover there is a place that you can visit called Megiddo overlooking a 1:16 valley the valley of Jezreel on the opposite side of that Valley is the city of Nazareth up on the hill it's kind of 1:23 interesting that from Megiddo you see Nazareth when Jesus was being raised as a child he would look across that Valley 1:29 and see Megiddo you wonder you can't help but speculate how much did he know as a child most Scholars presume that he 1:36 g into his full knowledge at this baptism but who knows but uh the valley of Jezreel there really isn't battle 1:42of Armageddon by the way that's what we all speak of it Armageddon has it has a relationship to Jerusalem that England 1:49 did to the Normandy invasion in other words it's the Gathering Place and uh but the target of course is Jerusalem 1:55 and uh all of us have seen the little maps in Prophecy books which uh talks 2:02 about the sequence of the battle of Armageddon which is actually detailed in Daniel 11 it starts by Push by the kings 2:09 of the South against a king of the north we usually see the European Confederacy coming in and everything's going 2:16 swimmingly until the kings of the East..."
'uh are on the horizon and uh it's 2:21 commonly Vision envisioned as a four-power conflict and setting aside for the moment who the kings of the South and 2:27 kings of the North are these are all idioms from Daniel 11 the question is 2:33 where do we find this Western Confederacy in Daniel 11 if you look you won't find it there it's an inference 2:40 we draw because we know from other passages that and
the Antichrist comes from the Roman Empire out of this comes 2:47 all come all kinds of conjectures that the um Antichrist is a Western European 2:54 based leader and uh we're going to explore that if you look at Daniel 11 we'll discover that there isn't a 3:00 western Confederacy as such but let's uh back uh step back all the way to the 3:07 beginning the earliest civilizations are generally recognized as having started in what we call the Fertile Crescent 3:13 Egypt Assyria and Babylonia in a region that becomes Central to much uh most of 3:20 history and uh a city in the Assyrian Empire called Babylon uh ultimately 3:26 under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar becomes an Empire and it is succeeded by the Persians and 3:34 the Persians uh are succeeded by the Greeks and uh that brings us up almost 3:40 to the Roman period in fact the leader that we're going to spend some time looking at is Alexander the Great a 3:47 young guy that the age of 29 found no more worlds to conquer in 11 years he 3:53 conquered most of the known world and uh when he dies at his Peak 4:00 actually um his Empire is divided among his four generals Cassander Antigonus 4:08 , , , and Seleucia and uh since Israel the two powerful players are Seleucid and Ptolemy and as Rivals 4:17 they constantly uh engage over this buffer State called Israel and so um the 4:23 there's we often speak of the 400 silent years those are the years between the Testaments the the Old Testament ending 4:30 at the Book of Malachi and the New Testament of course uh with the gospels and we the 400 roughly 400 years between 4:36 those are sometimes called the silent years well that's overlooking the fact that much of that history during those 4:42 four centuries is detailed in advance in uh Daniel chapter 11 so we're going to 4:48 discover that Daniel 11 is a very key passage to really understand for many reasons but obviously after the Greek 4:53 Empire came the Roman Empire and uh most of us are familiar with that except most 4:58 of us make a mistake about that that I'll come to we know that the um..."
"5:04 Antichrist comes from the Roman Empire in its extension and um the 5:12 most uh fundamental passage for end time uh Bible studies is the 70 weeks of 5:18 Daniel the last four verses of Daniel chapter 9 and if you haven't studied that one of the things you want to do is 5:26 undertake a diligent study of the last four verses of Daniel 9 if you if you understand those four verses then 5:32 everything else will fall into place now people who are confused about those four verses will turn out to have all kinds 5:38 of other problems and trying to lay out the end time scenario the 70 weeks consist of four verses verse 24"

"which 5:46 gives you the scope of the whole thing then 69 weeks of years in verse 25 and U then an 5:53interval and then a final 7-year period in verse 27 those
those are the four 5:58 segments that make up this uh fabulous passage the 69 weeks are in and of 6:08 themselves the most profound substantiation of the uh word of God
6:14 than you can than you can find um Gabriel gives Daniel a precise mathematical formula that from the 6:20 Commandment to restore into Jerusalem to the .....the Messiah the king will be 173,880 days that's essentially what he 6:27 says and we know that where what the decree was to restore Jerusalem and we also know the date that Jesus the only 6:34 date he allowed himself to be presented as a king was Palm Sunday it turns out that the that uh Gabriel told Daniel 6:43 virtually five centuries in advance the exact day that the Messiah would present himself to Jerusalem what makes this 6:50 particularly provocative on this timeline uh less than halfway through 6:56 this time is when the entire Old Testament was translated into Greek uh called the Septuagint version that was 7:02 about 300 years prior to Christ Ministry so setting aside who wrote Daniel and when he wrote it and all that it almost 7:09 doesn't matter it was in black and white three centuries before Christ's Ministry and it predicts uh with a Precision 7:15 that's astonishing but after this famous 69 weeks which I encourage you to really 7:22 dig into and get the background on..."

10:20 of the Roman Empire because in our parlance most of us call it the Byzantine Empire we give it another 10:26 label but it actually is a simply the Eastern leg of the Roman Empire and we'll talk a little bit about that and 10:33 one of the possibilities that seems to be suggested all through the scripture 10:39 is that this coming world leader is yes from the Roman Empire but not its Western leg but from the Eastern leg and 10:46 that shatters a lot of the presumptions that so many of us have encountered in reading books and watching maps and so10:53 forth in this area let's take a good look at or quick look at um Daniel 10:58 chapter two most of us are familiar with this dramatic dream that the young King 11:04 Nebuchadnezzar had where he had a dream and and he asked his advisers to interpret it for him they couldn't they 11:11 uh called upon Daniel and Daniel of course did and he not only interpret told Nebuchadnezzar what his dream was but he 11:19 also interpreted what it meant so it's all in Chapter 2 and what Nebuchadnezzar 11:25 saw in his dream was a metal image and its head was of gold its arms and 11:32 chest of silver belly and thighs of brass legs of iron and we're going to discover that 11:39 this portrays four Empires that will endure between Daniel 11:45 and the fifth Empire that God himself establishes on the planet Earth just 11:51 four empires not three not seven four and
this last empire
the fourth one
goes 11:56 into a strange phase
where it's iron mixed with Clay..."

"if we didn't have other 12:01 visibility we'd assume there are five Empires except it's going to be very clear that there's four by the interpretation and by other visions that 12:07 impinge on this well what Nebuchadnezzar saw was a rock a stone cut without hands 12:14 which clobbered this uh the feet of this uh this uh metal uh image and uh that 12:21 stone grew to be a mountain that filled the whole earth that is the whole earth not just the local region the good news 12:28 is Daniel interpret this for us the gold he explains is Babylon it's both the 12:34 King Nebuchadnezzar and the Empire that he represents but he goes on to explain that you're going to be succeeded by 12:40 another that would be the Persian Empire and it in turn will be succeeded by another the Greek Empire and it in turn 12:47 will be succeeded by Rome and I'm going to call it Rome phase one because in the 12:53 in the uh Vision that fourth Empire breaks into 12:58 pieces gets divided but then is seen to come back together in a final form which 13:04 we're just going to call Rome Phase 2 and uh and of course the stone cut without 13:11 hands is is none other than the stone which the Builder rejected the one it's 13:17 an idiom of course of Jesus Christ you know it's amazing to take an idiom like a rock or a stone and discover how 13:24 consistently it is used uh rhetorically throughout the entire scripture Paul in 13:29 1 Corinthians 10:4 can say that rock that followed him through the Wilderness where where where the water came out of 13:35 was Christ that do mean literally he's speaking he's speaking of it of course rhetorically but it's interesting 13:40 whether it's the rock in the wilderness that gave the water the living water or whether it's the stone cut without hands 13:46 or uh and so forth that check your Bible and with a concordance and it's astonishing to see how consistently the 13:52 Holy Spirit uses the idioms all the way through most Scholars recognize that the iron and the iron mixed with clay 13:59 is an empire in two phases now Babylon of course uh was dominant on the planet 14:06 Earth from about 606 to about 539 BC where it was conquered when they were conquered by the Cyrus the Persian and U 14:13 from 539 to about 332 BC when Alexander the Great uh establishes the Greek 14:19 Empire he dies but his four generals take over and we'll talk more about that 14:24 and ultimately though Rome takes over uh the Greek Empire Rome emerges about 68 14:30 BC about 44 BC Julius Caesar is assassinated 31 BC is the battle Actium 14:35 about 64 ad is when Nero begins his persecutions in 284 ad 14:41 Diocletian does several things that are worthy of note to us one is he 14:47 divides the empire into two parts by then it has grown among other things he 14:52 also was able to get the formal surrender of Mesopotamia from Iran so the Empire had grown so large 14:59 that it wasn't manageable so he appoints a co- Regent to help him one and and uh
15:06 uh that's where we begin to sense that it's breaking into two legs we always see that we see this the U uh image of 15:14 Nebuchadnezzar as some as presumably a man standing with two legs and he has 10 toes that's going to be important later 15:21 um many of us failed to recognize that in the idiom of the image is also 15:26 suggested that there's two legs if you will they're not of equal length because the Western leg evaporates in about Fort 15:34 76 anyway Diocletian divides it into two uh to uh armed with a core 15:40 Regent um Constantine gets so fed up with a paganism in Rome that he 15:47 relocates the primary capital of the world from Rome to uh Byzantium..."

so 17:23 we're going to take a look at that and of course we've had a lot of attention in our own prophetic Horizon because the 17:29 Roman Empire seems to be getting ready for what we'll call phase two the Treaty 17:34 of Paris the treaties of Rome in in Middle 60 50s 16th century the U um uh 17:44 parliament in 58 and we won't go through all the details but obviously it is increasingly grown till in 1993 the 17:50 Maastricht treaty replaced the Treaty of Rome which provides for a a United States of Europe if you will Common 17:56 foreign policy common military common currency and uh and Euro of course is making its 18:02 beginning so there's been much attention on Europe as the emergent 18:08 superstate but a lot of that driven by the presumption that out of that will come the Antichrist and indeed he may 18:13 except let's we're going to take a look at what Daniel and some of the other prophets have had uh to say about all 18:19 this in Daniel chapter 7 we now shift what Daniel had his 18:24 experience with Nebuchadnezzar when he was a young man and Nebuchadnezzar was also just taken over 18:30 the scene will shift in Daniel 7 towards the end of his uh time in Babylon and 18:36 he's going to talk about uhu we talked about the Daniel chapter 2 the the 18:41 many poly metallic image Babylon Persia Greece Rome these same Empires 18:48 are profiled for Daniel by God directly with a vision directly given to Daniel 18:54 same subject different idioms Nebuchadnezzar saw it as man sees 18:59 it as a series of bright shiny Metals God presented it to Daniel the way he sees it as a string or a series 19:07 of voracious beasts in Daniel chapter 7 he sees a creature that looks sort of 19:12 like a winged lion then that's followed by a bear that rises up on one side and 19:18 that's followed by a leopard that's in moves so fast that he hardly touches the 19:23 ground and uh and then then there's a the fourth one is so terrible 19:29 Daniel can't even find a a comfortable uh parallel he just calls it the great and terrible beast and it's the one that 19:36 has the 10 heads and all these idioms are echoed for us all through the scripture including the Book of 19:41 Revelation so these idioms become very familiar to us if you study prophecy but in Daniel chapter
19:48 7 we're going to take a look at some of the verses it says these great in starting about verse 17 these great 19:54 beasts which are four there again you see you have the emphasis on four four not five four

well let's take a look at Daniel 11 for what insights it will give 35:54 us the first two verses talk about the Persian Empire and uh I won't go through the the list 36:00 of these although there some very important people here not only Cyrus who's detailed in Daniel 5 and also Isaiah 45 there's a letter written to 36:06 him by name by God 150 years before he's born Xerxes1 one is probably the we 36:12 believe is the is the king of Esther the Book of Esther and Artaxerxes Lomgimanus is the one 36:18 that triggers the 70 week prophecy of Daniel he he gave Nehemiah the authority to rebuild the city but from verse three 36:26 and four we talk about Alexander the Great and that of course has been detailed for us in Daniel 8 for us and 36:32 that follows then the what follows after verse four are the the when the generals 36:37 divide the Empire and again we're going to focus on and the passage focuses on primarily Seleucus and 36:43 Ptolemy I won't take you through the details because we don't have time but first if you look through 5 through 35 you'll 36:50 discover that there's Kings of the South fighting the kings of the North and the details there fit history so precisely 36:58 that critics of the Bible have tried to argue that that Daniel must be a fraud must have been written after the fact 37:05 that overlooks the fact that long before this list is over the entire Old Testament is translated into Greek so it 37:12 it's hard for someone to forge into an already translated and widely 37:18 distributed set of documents but that's that's obviously nonsense but the Ptolemy's we go through six cycles of the 37:26 Ptolemy's and we go through um eight cycles of the of the Seleucids and 37:32 uh but the most notable one is the last one Antiochus epiphanies because he's so prominent in u triggering the uh 37:39 rebellion in Israel so we'll leave it at that but from verse 36 on now we're 37:46 talking about Antiochus Epiphanes again but here again the language will go far beyond Antiochus himself let's take a look at 37:53 it verse 36 and the King shall do according to his will there's the willful King and he shall exalt himself 37:59 and magnify himself above every God and shall speak marvelous things against the god of gods and shall prosper till the 38:06 indignation be accomplished for that which is determined shall be done now 38:12 this can be applied sort of to Antiochus Epiphanes but the language seems to go far beyond anything he did neither shall 38:18 he regard the god of his fathers nor the desire of women nor regard any God for 38:23 he shall magnify himself above all and in his estate shall he honor the god of 38:29 forces and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honor with gold and silver and with precious stones and pleasant 38:35 things thus shall he do in the most strongholds with a strange God whom he 38:40 shall acknowledge and increase with glory and he shall cause them to rule over many and shall divide the land for 38:48 gain a and at the time of the end now at this point see from verse 38:54 36-40 you can sort of argue that maybe just ???? language talking about Antiochus Epiphanies but from verse 40 to the end 39:01 of the chapter it's clearly far beyond Antiochus epiphanies but he's using it's as 39:06 if he's looking through him to the end time and at the time of the end shall 39:12 the King of the South push at him and the King of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind with chariots and 39:18 with Horsemen and with many ships and he shall enter into the countries and shall overflow and pass over he shall also 39:24 enter into the Glorious land and many countries shall be overthrown but these shall Escape out of his hand 39:31 Edom and Moab and the chief children of Ammon boy that's a strange thing this 39:36 particular piece of ground which we today would call Jordan for some reason 39:41 eludes his grasp most Scholars speculate that it's to give the remnant place to flee to but 39:49 that's conjecture he shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries and the land of Egypt shall not escape and he 39:55 shall have power over the treasures of gold of silver and over all the precious things of Egypt and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps but 40:02 Tidings out of the East and out of the North shall trouble him that's kind of interesting 40:10 especially if you've been following world events and you understand the Shanghai pact where China and Russia have 40:16 joined forces against the United States by treaty joined by Central most of the players in Central Asia and the that 40:23 when NATO had redefined itself as a global police force in 1999 that drove our that chilled not 40:29 only our enemies but also our our allies but China and Russia and most of central Asia signed the Shanghai pack and it's 40:36 interesting that the threat he sees here comes out of the East and out of the North shall trouble him therefore he
