Every fall, Buffalo Trace releases a group of special whiskey under its Antique Collection series (BTAC), and they are snapped up within days.
They are all exceptional.
William Larue Weller (WLW) is an uncut and unfiltered wheated bourbon that is hand-bottled at barrel proof.
You cannot escape the fact that this bourbon is tough, uncompromising, ruthless and thoroughly brilliant in equal measures. – The World’s Best Whiskies
Born in 1825, William Laure Weller one was of the early distilling pioneers in Kentucky.
After serving in the War with Mexico as a member of the Louisville Brigade in the 1840s, Weller returned to Louisville to take part in a family tradition of whiskey distilling.
Credited as being the first distiller to produce Kentucky Straight Bourbon using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill; Weller did so to produce a softer, smoother taste.
Weller’s ‘wheated bourbons’ became extremely popular, so popular in fact, it’s been said that he was forced to put a green thumbprint on his invoices and barrels to ensure that customers were receiving the real deal.
