Did I mention he was a street poet extraordinaire?
Song is just unreal. In high school we lived in the last subdivision in Jefferson County (Louisville) before hitting country, farms etc. Tell people you grew up in Louisville and where and how we lived was not the image in antibody's mind, that I can assure you. We cruised the backstreets. We put pony kegs in creeks etc. It's all grown up and developed now but it's where my affinity for getting off the beaten path was born and nurtured, it lives in me strong to this day. I don't see it ever going away. I'm going to put a slide show of pics of the bike set to this song. I'll try and send it to drop box or something. Google+ blocks copyrighted content these days (sucks).
I would bold the lines that hit home the most but it would just be the whole damn song lol.
One soft infested summer me and Terry became friends
Trying in vain to breathe the fire we was born in
Catching rides to the outskirts tying faith between our teeth
Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house getting wasted in the heat
And hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets
With a love so hard and filled with defeat
Running for our lives at night on them backstreets
Slow dancing in the dark on the beach at Stockton's Wing
Where desperate lovers park we sat with the last of the Duke Street Kings
Huddled in our cars waiting for the bells that ring
In the deep heart of the night we cut loose from everything
to go running on the backstreets, running on the backstreets
Terry, we swore we'd live forever, takin' on them backstreets together.
Endless juke joints and Valentino drag where dancers scraped the tears up off the streets dressed down in rags
Running into the darkness, some hurt bad, some really dying
At night sometimes it seemed you could hear the whole damn city crying
Blame it on the lies that killed us
Blame it on the truth that ran us down
You can blame it all on me Terry
It don't matter to me now
When the breakdown hit at midnight
There was nothing left to say but I hated him and I hated you when you went away
Laying here in the dark you're like an angel on my chest
Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness
Remember all the movies, Terry, we'd go see
Trying to learn how to walk like heroes we thought we had to be
And after all this time to find we're just like all the rest
Stranded in the park and forced to confess
To hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets
We swore forever friends on the backstreets until the end.
Hiding on the backstreets, hiding on the backstreets.

Okay...gotta make it through the second half of the show lol. That's right. That's only one half lol. Told you I was a fan. First show I saw was fall of 81. Cincinnati. Senior year in high school. You were 4? lol.Mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday "Let me go to Cincy with my friends to the Springsteen show". I only had two albums of his, thought he was okay, but everybody who ever saw him live said "You gotta go". She relented eventually lol. Last show of "The River" tour. "Hungry Heart" was his first top ten single. He had finally made it big, all those years of promise finally broke through.
He played close to four hours. 13 encores...I lost count actually. Last song? Twist and shout...bout 13 minutes of it...All the lights in the house were on, not one person sitting down. Everybody was dancing their asses off. 17,000 + people. We left, I was soaking wet with sweat. I was 17 years old. I had to bend over in the parking garage and catch my breath. (Stone cold sober) I was exhausted. I couldn't imagine how he and the band must have felt. The next day I went and bought every album I didn't have, a poster, and a bunch of buttons.
Life changing event.
17 years old.
Remember it like yesterday.
Unreal.
It would be more fun to tell the stories and play the songs for you in person you know?
Right?
It's okay I suppose lol.
I got a lifetime of stories in me.
Just want that special someone who wants to listen to them and build a home (not a house, I got one of those lol) and a life together.
Love you sweetheart.
